A Religious Game [Thor]

Aleena had never been a religious person.

Perhaps it had been because her mother had never really believed; people claimed that the first exposure a child received to religion was the one they most often clung to. But Aleena's mother had been more about math and science, leaving Aleena and her brothers to figure out religion on their own. Truthfully, that was how it should be. Her youngest brother had found the Christian God, and was living comfortably as His follower. The other claimed there was nothing out there, and had settled into life as a content Athiest, just like his mother.

But while they had found their comfortable space, Aleena had yet to discover hers. She was always uncomfortable with the aspect of religion. She knew something existed; unlike her brother, she did not completely conform to the idea of athiesm. But at the same time, the Christian God just didn't sit right with her. Really, could anyone blame her? So, over the past few months, she had taken time out of her days to researching various religons.

But of all the religions she had discovered, only a handful of gods had settled with her. And of all those gods, only one did she truly feel some sort of connection with. So, on a night when Rafael was out with the Council, Aleena decided to take her venture into religion. She had bought some ale, as mead wasn't exactly readily available, an entire boxset of Top Gear (though, let's face it, that was more of a gift to herself than to any god that might happen to like it), and a couple of candles.

She set up a temporary offering space on the coffee table near the television. Two candles, one red and one purple, settled on each side of the glass mug. She filled the mug halfway with ice, unscrewed the top of the ale, and poured in a healthy dose. It was a golden ale, with a 5.0% strength. It was more for the taste than anything else, but still she hoped it would work.

With the candles lit and the ale poured, Aleena put in the first episode of Top Gear and leaned back. She had bought herself a six pack, as the ale was more for the gods than herself, and so held a glass bottle of lager in her hands. 

Cold drink and a good show. What more could a god ask for?

Thor wasn't entirely certain why he'd ended up in an apartment building in New York, but it felt right. Like something had been calling to him, calling his name and saying, "Thor, come sit on my couch and watch Top Gear with me. I have booze." In the past, it had been a call he had seldom refused. Much as he'd have liked to deny that it was really a request, he had felt the energy draw of an offering toward him, and he hadn't really wanted to draw himself back.

It didn't feel like a trap. It would've had a different emotional signature attached to it. Sure, someone who was good at deceiving others could probably manage it, but this felt earnest. Not that he would have stopped himself even if it hadn't--Thor had a habit of believing the best in everyone, even at times when he was obviously being tricked. He thought he'd be able to tell, though, and this felt like it was a little hopeful and a little skeptical. That was fair. If he were giving an offering to himself, he'd probably feel a similar way.

He lifted his hand and knocked lightly on the door, which still managed to sound like he was attempting to break it down using only his knuckles. "Hello?" he asked, trying to stay quiet. "You called for me? It's, um..." He paused for a moment, trying to think of a way to give an indicator of his identity without really giving himself away. "It's the thunder guy. You invited me. So if you could let me in, I'd appreciate it."

There. That should have been enough. If it wasn't, he'd turn away and go on doing what he was doing before he'd gotten here, and if the person in question was curious, he could answer questions. But this seemed like a sufficient introduction, he thought. Especially considering that finding a god on your doorstep after asking them to hang out wasn't exactly a common occurrence--or at least, it hadn't been in the past.

A trap would really ruin his mood and wouldn't work out well for the person in question, so he hoped for their sake that they came to the door with good intentions.

Halfway into the first episode, someone knocked on the door. Okay, perhaps "knocked" wasn't exactly the best word to use. Knocked implied that someone was just gently rapping their knuckles against the door. This sounded like someone was purposely trying to break the door down. It was enough to have her heart jump into her throat, and her body to immediately tense. She stood, slowly, and moved to the door. Her left hand was clenched into a fist. 

She was ready to fight.

Case in point? It was not a good idea to sound like you were trying to rip the door down when the bodyguard of a very important vampire was inside alone. It might get her tense and angry, only to then falter when you decide to reveal your true intentions -- and your true identity. Especially when the woman, who had never been truly close to any deity, realized that she had a real flesh and blood version of a god on her doorstep.

For a brief moment, she considered not opening the door. This had to be a prank. There was no way a god of any kind would take time out of his or her day to visit Aleena, of all people. Surely they had better worshipers. Surely they had more important worshipers. She was just an overly strong woman on the best side of New York, wasting her life away protecting a man who couldn't do it himself. Certainly not important enough to warrant the attention of a god.

But despite all her doubts, and before she could stop herself, Aleena reached over, grabbing the doorknob and turning it. The door opened silently, and for a brief moment, the woman stood before the God of Thunder, her eyes wide and her mouth pressed together tightly, lips forming a thin line. But then, after a moment or two, she finally managed to gather up the courage to speak.

"Thunder Guy, huh...? ...so, you... wanna watch some Top Gear?"

Smooth, Aleena. Super smooth.

Thor observed the woman before him. She seemed surprised, almost in awe. To be fair, so was he. He couldn't remember the last time he had been actually looked at like he was a god. He had shown himself to his followers in a very different sense for as long as he remembered, so no one that had believed in him had seen his physical form. He wasn't sure why he hadn't done the same for this woman, but he had really wanted to watch Top Gear, he guessed. And maybe this was the only way it would have worked for her, given the skepticism and doubt that had spread across the twenty first century like a plague. Regardless, he was here now, and they both seemed pretty confused that he was there.

Still, it was undeniable: he was on her doorstep, and she had in fact called for him. "Yes," he said, a bit uncertain. "I was... I heard you also had alcohol. I thought we could, uh, hang out. And get to know each other. Or something." He chastised himself for sounding so uncertain. This was a first impression, and he didn't want to give the impression of being wishy washy or nervous. He was Thor, damn it, god of thunder and fertility and punching things indiscriminately. He could afford to speak with a little more confidence.

"This is weird for me, too," he said, his voice strong and resolute. "Showing up in person isn't something I've made a habit of. But I'm here now, and I would very much like to watch Top Gear with you, and to enjoy your company as you might enjoy mine." That was better. "Feel free to ask me any questions you have about me or about what to do. I'd be happy to answer them. After we start watching, I mean."

Oh, good. So he was just as awkward as she was. 

At least now she didn't feel so self-conscious, Aleena couldn't help but note, taking half a step back from the doorway. Granted, she was letting a stranger into her home -- even if this stranger was a god -- and she was still in her pajamas, but at least she wasn't the only awkward one out of the two of them. In an effort to ease the tension, the redhead gave the other a smile, motioning for him to enter the rather large apartment.

"Yeah, I got alcohol," she said, motioning to the coffee table. The bottle of ale sat near the little altar she had created. The six pack was on the floor, near where she had been sitting. "Gotta admit, though, I wasn't sure what kind you liked, so I kinda just grabbed whatever..." Reaching up, Aleena rubbed the back of her neck with one hand. "I hope ale's to your taste. If not, I grabbed some lager. I think Rafael has some whiskey and wine around here somewhere."

She shut the door behind the god, as soon as he was in. Though perhaps shutting wasn't the exact term, as, in her confusion, Aleena seemed to have forgotten her strength and slammed the door a little too hard. The hinges creaked, and the wood wobbled. For a moment, she was afraid that she was going to have to call Raf and alert him that a new door was needed. But then it stilled, and she gave a quiet sigh of relief. 

"Go ahead and make yourself comfortable, I guess," she said, moving around to the couch. "I... guess you can take the cup on the table, unless you want to get a different one... to be honest, I'm not sure how this works. I am about halfway through the first episode of Top Gear, though. I can restart it, if you'd like to see the whole thing."

Take it one step at a time, she had to tell herself. He seems just as confused and unsure as you do.

Thor grinned, a little awkwardly, as he stepped inside the apartment. "I like ale. I like most kinds of alcohol. I'm not too picky." His eyes widened when the door slammed, but he didn't quite jump as someone else might have, only looked at her with a certain curiosity. He picked up the cup she'd indicated, then settled into the couch in front of the television and glanced at the paused screen.

"Televisions are weird and complicated," he mumbled, "but I like them." It was more to himself than to Aleena, but he said it loud enough for her to hear all the same. "I appreciate the effort you've put forth," he added, glancing down at the candles. He took a long swallow from the cup he'd acquired, then grinned at her. "This is good stuff. Thank you." He paused, then added, "I don't mind starting halfway through the episode. I think I've seen this one before anyway." Another pause. "Not that I won't enjoy it or anything. I like rewatching them."

Before his mouth could further betray him, he filled it with more ale. He hadn't been around this woman long, but he could already tell that he enjoyed her company. She seemed enough like him that they'd get along very well--and it was tougher than one might expect to find someone on Asgard that was like him. Sure, he was popular with the people of Midgard, but most of Asgard had usually brought some combination of intellect and power to the table. He and Loki had, for the most part, been the exceptions. Maybe that was why they'd gotten along so well. Granted, they did tend to favor power more than intellect, but it was still a little alienating, especially around his father and stepmother who both had foresight and planning ability far superior to his own. But the people of Midgard understood what it was like, and he felt like this woman did, too.

"What's your name?" he asked, suddenly realizing that he couldn't refer to her in that manner forever, nor did he want to. "I'm Thor. ...But you knew that." He shook his head. "Seems like you're like me--sometimes you don't know your own strength." He gestured toward the door, which had long since stopped wobbling. "I'm glad you shut it and not me. I wasn't even trying to knock that hard and I almost broke it."

"If you don't mind," she nodded, and grabbed the remote. The Plus pressed play, allowing the episode to continue, though she hung around the door for just a moment longer, watching the god. Once she was sure he was satisfied with the set up and alcohol, Aleena allowed herself to relax. At least she hadn't been smote yet. That was always a good sign.

"I tried to find something you would like," she admitted, fiddling with the lock on the door. She tried to make it sound as though she did not spend over twenty minutes in the alcohol isle of the local grocery store, debating over three different brands and alcohol contents. "My employer gives me a bit of an allowance, so I figured I could go big. Go big or go home, as they say."

Aleena smiled, albeit a little sheepishly, as the Thunder God pointed out her momentarily forgotten strength. She knew better than to forget such a thing, especially after the numerous accidents she had caused during school and the earlier part of her life, and yet she continued. She continuously forgot her own strength, forgot that the mere flick of her wrist could break a door or kill a man. It was such a stupid thing to do, to forget her faults; she chided herself for it every day.

"They call us Pluses," she said, after a moment of silence. "I just happen to be a strong one."

The red head moved from the door, which she locked, back towards the couch. She lifted the beer bottle from the ground, brought it to her lips to take a sip. It was a momentary relief for her embarrassment, though she tried to pretend she just wanted another drink. It was easier to pretend she wasn't bothered by her show of strength, as though it was just something she meant to do, than to admit it was rather inconvenient. Aleena flopped on the couch, next to Thor, and took another drink.

After a moment of silence and Top Gear, the redhead finally said, "'M Aleena, by the way. Pleasure to meet you, Thunder Guy."

Thor grinned. "Go big or go home is practically the motto of the Aesir. I can appreciate that." Taking another swig, he focused on the program for quite a while. This was pleasant. He hadn't been invited over to anybody's house to watch Top Gear in... well, ever, that he could remember, especially not somebody thinking about honoring him as a god.

"I've heard of Pluses," he stated, "I've just never been well-acquainted with one. Seems you know at least some of my troubles. You can share them with me whenever you want and I'll do my best to help. You know. Since you're choosing to honor me and all. That is sort of what I'm here for. Might be easier to text than pray, though." He pulled out his phone, pulling up his number on the page and lying it on the coffee table.

"Good to meet, you, Aleena. I'm Thor... but you knew that already," he finished, with a bit of laugh in his voice. "Otherwise I doubt you'd have called for me. If you don't mind me asking, why is it that you did?" He looked over at her, an eyebrow raised. "It's not often that I get new followers, is all. So I'm not really used to it. That and I don't think I've ever been to New York in the flesh before, nor have I ever met up with my followers in person. I'm just curious, because this is a really... new experience for me and I want to feel like I actually know you." He paused, then added, "I like to get to know people that I associate with frequently. I just like to get to know people. And since we're at least for the moment entering this sort of situation, I'd like to know more about you. I'd tell you more about myself, but it's basically all written down." He chuckled, and the sound rumbled through the apartment. "Anything you want to tell me, you can, and anything you don't, you don't have to."

Another hesitant smile crossed her lips, though, again, Aleena tried to cover it with a sip of alcohol. It was against her nature to seem nervous, even if her guest was a god. Especially if her guest was a god, she supposed; Rafael hired her to keep him safe from whatever might be out there, and that included the immortal. She took another gulp of beer at that thought, a swallow that was almost too difficult to force down. Her hand reached up, to wipe the residue off her mouth.

"I'm too strong for my own good, if that's what you're getting at," she said, placing the bottle between her thigh and the armrest of the couch. Her eyes never left the television, though they did briefly shift to look the god over for yet another time. "'S tough, yeah. But I'm not one of those who enjoys complaining. Can't really bother, in my line of work. Just punch stuff, pull people apart, and try to clean up the blood stains when you're done." Another sip. "But I guess you'd know all about that."

When he asked her why, she had to pause. Truthfully, she knew the truth; Aleena had wanted to try to find some sort of religion to fill that "religion void" she had been born birth. That answer wouldn't have been good enough for him, though. She knew that much. So why had she decided on him? He was the God of Thunder, Fertility, Punching Things... God of a lot of things she could identify with, really. And, perhaps, he also seemed to be a bit like her. 

"I... don't know," she finally said, glancing down, suddenly finding her beer bottle interesting. Aleena fiddled with it, turning it this way and that in her hands. "I guess I wanted a god I could identify with. I'm not... exactly the most normal of humanity, even among Pluses. I work in a world I don't belong, and I can break even the toughest man in two without blinking. I guess I figured if anyone understood me..."

Gods, she sounded so stupid. She knew she did. And that was enough to cause her to throw down the rest of her beer and go for another. Maybe enough alcohol would cause her mouth to finally work correctly. That, or shut down for the rest of the night. If she was going to have a relationship with this God, she was going to need to stop sounding like an uncertain child.

Thor smiled, shaking his head. "Being too strong for my own good has been my entire life. I couldn't do activities with a lot of people from Midgard because I was too powerful. The one time I tried to go fishing, I caught the Midgard Serpent and nearly capsized the boat." He sighed at the memory, unclear even in his own mind whether it was out of fondness or resignation. He finished off his own alcohol, then placed the cup back on the coffee table. "I think it's good for people like us to be able to have one another. Just so that we know we're not alone. Or something." He gestured vaguely with his right hand, then put it down and shook his head. "I don't know."

When she admitted why she'd chosen him, Thor nodded and grinned a little. "I know that feeling all too well. I was never quite a bodyguard for anybody, but Loki was never particularly... powerful in comparison, and my dad wanted me to do what would further his agenda all the time. I never got tired of it--I don't think I could get tired of fighting--but after a while I felt like no one else understood me. And nobody's really seemed to before you." He grinned at her, leaning back further into the couch and focusing his eyes back on the television. "I'm glad you chose me. I feel like we're going to get along very well. Maybe even famously so. And I could always use having friends that are a little less like Loki and a little more like me." He stopped momentarily, then finished, "Not that there's anything bad about people like Loki, but being the designated dumb muscle gets lonely and frustrating and depressing sometimes. But you knew that already. That's why I'm here, I think. And I appreciate it."

This time, the smile stayed on her lips for more than few seconds. She knew how he felt. Well, perhaps not exactly how he felt, as she had never capsized a boat, but she had caused a few accidents in her day. She had broken several mirrors and windows, thrown a motorcycle down the street... Yeah, she had destroyed many things during her childhood and adolescence, most of them on accident. That was why she smiled, albeit sheepishly, as Thor finished his story.

"My first boyfriend broke up with me after I threw his motorcycle across the street because he tried to get me to sleep with him." She grabbed another beer, popped the top and brought it to her lips. The memory of the breakup was still an embarrassing one, even if she still knew she had done the right thing. He was an asshole, but she had loved him. And so, knowing she was supposed to, Aleena put more confidence than she felt into her voice as she added, "It was worth it."

She paused a moment to sip her beer, mulling over the words in her head. Aleena was not exactly the thinking type of woman; she was more the punch now and ask questions later type. That was what made her a good thrall. But when dealing with gods, she knew that she had keep her head. She made it halfway through the bottle of beer, then pulled the glass from her lips. Idly, her thumb traced the soft curve of the glass mouth.

"I... I understand that, I guess. I work for a vampire, one of the Moons on the Council," she explained, tipping the mouth of the bottle in his direction. "He's a good man. At least, he is to me. In fact, he's one of my dearest friends. But he's also smart. Far smarter than I could ever be. Cunning. He knows how to run a business and destroy his enemies before they can even rise up. I appreciate his company; I really do. But he's not... he doesn't understand. He knows how to think. I just know how to fight."

Thor had picked up a few words of vernacular English since he'd started walking around on Midgard. He'd been there a while, and for the most part he'd managed to stay up-to-date (he didn't stop saying "rad" until 2007, but that was beside the point) and not sound too dated compared to the modern day. He'd attached to several memes as well, though he used them sparingly. Thinking this might be a little more relatable than what he might otherwise say, Thor drew upon his memory banks and said a single word.

"Nice." The C was elongated to a near-hiss. He nodded sagely, as though he'd said something very wise, then smiled. "I'd expect nothing less of one of my followers. Good job." He didn't pick up on her uncertainty, but then again, he wouldn't have acted much differently if he had. Maybe he'd have said something a little more comforting than "nice," but the rest of his sentence changing was unlikely.

He nodded when she made her statement about Rafael, and smiled at her. "There's no shame in being the fighter. Don't let anyone ever convince you there is, no matter how smart they claim to be. Chances are, if they're really that smart, they wouldn't have insulted you in the first place, and you have my explicit permission to knock their block off. For both of us." Thor smiled, adding, "And if you can't do it for whatever reason--immortality or whatever, then give me a text. Mjolnir deals pretty handily with immortals, and I'm not going to stand for people insulting me and mine. So long as it doesn't end up going against what I'm trying to do in the long run, that is to say if it's a giant or other being like that, I'll be here in no time. You can hold them down while I smash in their face." Then he laughed, shaking his head at the television. "Now I'm almost hoping for it. A god/devotee punching party against an aggressor would be really fun."

"He tried to get me arrested for it, too. Claimed I was some kind of freak." She brought the beer up to her lips, grinning behind the bottle. "'Course, you can't bring that kinda shit into court. 'Help, my ex threw my bike across the street! Why are you looking at me like that? I don't care how small she looks! She--'" Aleena burst into a tiny fit of giggle, raising her arm up, to cover her mouth. "It was a beautiful trial. The judge was a bit of an asshole, anyways. So for once sexism paid off."

She could remember now, those few days that had nearly put her into a panic attack every time the judge turned his eyes onto her. Her ex had tried time and time again to get her to prove her strength, to get her to prove that she was some kind of freak. But the judge had taken one look at her and, with the sneer of his lip, Aleena had known she had won. He thought she was just a girl, unable to change her own oil, much less able to throw an entire motorcycle.

It had been beautiful to see him dismiss her ex like he was too far gone.

"Rafael keeps me around because of my strength." At least, she thought that was why. She knew why she stayed around, and it wasn't just because her Thralldom kept her glued to his side. He was a good man, especially to her, and he seemed to respect her. And she adored him. "And I don't mind being his muscle. Don't get me wrong at all! It's been quite a ride. And I've had to destroy a few werewolves, as well. That was fun."

She set the beer aside, leaning back in her seat. A smile crossed her lips. "We should go out and box sometimes. Whether against others or against each other. That would be a lot of fun, I think. As would beating up someone with my... -- my? is that a good word? -- god."

Thor grinned. "I have found that bigotry is one of the biggest things I've disliked since my return to Midgard, but I'm glad you could make it work for you at least the once." He thought about it for a while, then looked down at the table. "It makes me feel a little bad for being a bit of one myself toward Loki, sometimes. But I learned and I grew from it, so I think I'm okay now."

He nodded his agreement about her sentiment about being the stronger one in a pair. "Being the one to smash things can be fun and really satisfying. I'm surprised, actually, that so many people have decided they'd rather be the smart fragile ones. It just seems... unbalanced to me. Like they think about everything but what they're going to do when a werebear knocks down their door. I don't think that your philosophy will do you much good when you're being torn apart by a shark, you know? I dunno. Maybe I'm missing something that they get, but I just don't get why pairs like we're in aren't more common. Seems like you get more bases covered that way, have somebody that can handle multiple challenges, a variety sort of deal." He gestured vaguely with his hand again. "I don't know. I like the internet and hitting things. I try not to be a complicated guy, I leave that to Loki. He does it better than I do. And it seems like Rafael is a pretty complex guy, but you're... a girl who likes defending a guy she cares about and drinking and watching Top Gear. And I think that's pretty respectable."

Thor turned his head back to the television. "I'm not usually so talkative. When I talk for too long sometimes it gets a little awkward. But I'm sure you saw that. Anyway. I'd really like a boxing match or something, whether between us or somebody else."

Reaching over, Aleena nudged her elbow into his arm, amused at both his words and the way her bone seemed to bounce off his pure muscle. He was a big guy; even she would admit that. He was a god of pure strength and punching things. It would make sense that his muscles were bigger and stronger than they appeared. It would also make sense that Aleena, as easily distracted and amused as she was, to find something almost endearing about the way she bounced from that hit, only to fall back into another nudge.

"I feel like we all have those... those prejudices in us," she said, finally realizing she needed to actually say something, instead of simply bouncing off of the god's arm. A little grin formed on her lips, and she rested her head on the back of the couch, letting her eyes shift to the ceiling. "Some of our own doing, but others... others not so much, y'know? Society has its racism, its sexism, its... It has its faults, and they're ingrained in us. And it's our choice to fight past them. And some of us do."

Aleena brought the bottle up to her lips, frowned when she realized there was nothing left for her in the bottle. Her voice barely above a murmur, the redhead finished, "And some of us don't..."

She tossed the glass behind her, not even wincing as it hit a wall and shattered. She would clean it up later, when she was in a slightly better mood. Maybe after another two or three beers. It took more than a single six pack to get her up to "drunk" mode, but Aleena hoped that the next four beers would at least be enough to crank her up into "buzzed" or "tipsy" mode. She wanted the warmth. And so she grabbed another beer, popped the top, and nudged him once more.

"I think I could take ya, yeah? So long as you leave the godliness out of the area. Dull it down to what you'd be like as a human. 'Cause I definitely will not be able to beat a god. Even I'm not that cocky." She tossed her head back, gulping down half the bottle without a breath. "I'm pretty cocky. I like to hold my strength over Raf, especially when he's being an ass. But I'm not that cocky."
