Frequently Asked QuestionsSince there's been quite a bit of confusion for people unfamiliar with the medium, it seemed like a good idea to compile a list of things that tend to go unmentioned, but are still things you should know. So, for your convenience, here's a list of things you should know if you didn't already. If you have a question not answered by this FAQ or the rules, feel free to PM one of the staff and ask!
- Your first account should be your first character, as we don't have OOC accounts except for staff members.
- Unless explicitly stated otherwise, open threads are open to anyone. Most threads are still open after someone else has posted in them, but it's always good etiquette to ask the person who started the thread before joining.
- When in a thread with a character, give the other person something to reply to. Your characters should interact in some manner--having a character that does something that would drive away other people isn't a good idea unless you know the other player is going to interact with your character after that because they told you that was their intent.
- Communication is key. Always try to communicate if you're going to take a while to reply, if you're going to be gone for a while, etc.
- Plotters are great: use them! They're an excellent place to put your ideas for possible interactions between your character and someone else's! They're also good for trying to learn more about other characters. Generally speaking, it's much easier (and less nerve-wracking) to post on someone else's plotter and offer to interact with their characters than it is to wait for someone to post on yours. Many players will be flattered that you wanted to interact with them and will usually accept with at least one of their characters if they think they'll interact well with yours.
- Reading every bio on the site is unnecessary, but you should at least read the bios of the people you're threading with, as it's common courtesy. It's also easier to plot with people if you know their backstory and can bring it up in the plot (even though your character probably doesn't know any of that information).
- The Cbox is, at this point in time, an out-of-character space. In the near future, the Voice and IcedCoffeeCat will have in-character Cboxes on their websites!
- Generally speaking, we like to have people make an OC before they take a high-ranking canon.
- It's been stated in the rules proper, but it bears repeating: keep your word count around 300. It's pretty hard sometimes, but if you need a boost, describing the environment or your character's actions further doesn't hurt. We're not going to go counting words in every post most of the time, but we do know what a 300-word post looks like.
Again, feel free to PM us any questions!
