Alice was not dumb by any means. She was fully aware she was strolling through demon territory, and kept a lit cigarette in her hand or mouth always. It was easier to manipulate fire when there was a spark ready. Some of the Washington citizens gave her a dirty look, but she would flip them off or blow smoke in their face. Some woman had called her a vulgar name, and her skirt was set on fire. Alice didn't care if the woman worked on the corner, in the White House or was the President's wife; she insulted Alice, and nobody got away with that.
She bypass several people, and a light scent radiated from them. Alice's nose wiggled in confusion as she rarely encountered the scent in her travels. Here though, it was potent. Maybe this is what demons smelled like? But how could she, a Plus, smell demons? Maybe Pluses had this ability? She wasn't sure. Gripping the strap of her knapsack tighter, Alice continued to wander about the large city.
It was the late afternoon; people were getting off work, restaurants and bars were booming with the crowds, and children running off home. Alice's gaze landed on the young children hugging their parents, and wondered if she would ever meet her father. Would she die before she met the man? Would he acknowledge that a Plus was his daughter? Would he hug her? Would he forsake her? So many questions plagued her mind, and she needed answers preferably before she died. Inhaling her cigarette, the sweet scent of nicotine consumed her mind for a moment.
Hurrying past the children, Alice found a dirty alley and entered it. Sliding her knapsack down to the ground, Alice leaned against the brick wall, and enjoyed the cigarette. Moments like these is when she needed pause to recollect her thoughts and motivation. Her hand tightened on the worn strap, and she vaguely wondered if she needed to purchase a new knapsack soon. New stuff meant catching the eyes of thieves, and she had enough of them for a lifetime.
A problem with finding her father was that Alice was the split image of her mother. Maybe she got her temper from her father? Alice chuckled darkly at the thought. Well, hopefully she'll find out. Lung cancer or whatever was going to kill her soon enough anyway. Grinning, Alice picked up her knapsack again, and continued on her trek.
