{ SPIRITS } |
Spirits, sometimes known as ghosts, are incorporeal beings. They reside halfway in our world, halfway in another, and for the more human of them, they will stay that way until some condition is met that sets them free.
Spirits have existed since even before humans did -- there were spirits not just of animals, but of plants, and of rivers, and of streams. Spirits manifested as these things took personalities or were given them by other beings. After the advent of humanity, a human could leave a spirit behind in two ways: if something incredibly emotional or traumatic happened, they could leave a shade of themselves, an imprint on the world; or, if they died and they "weren't quite finished" with life, they could leave a ghost, which was just a reflection of their soul. These spirits became entities in and of themselves, and now work closely with the fae and witches.
ELEMENTAL SPIRITS: Born from stones, trees, the earth, and the water, these spirits are associated with whatever forest, stone, or body of water bore them to life. As such, they are often locked to those areas, and may not leave. If the thing they embody is hurt or destroyed -- like if their lake is filled, or their forest burned -- they will sicken or die along with it. LOCATIONAL SPIRITS: Related to elementals, but are more associated with towns, cities, or landmarks. It is said a town or city has its own "personality"; sometimes that means literally. ANIMAL SPIRITS: These spirits often act as guides to humans, and attach themselves to people accordingly. Though the human may never come to meet them, the spirit will whisper in their ears from the time they are born, giving them advice and trying their best to lead them on the right path. HUMAN SHADES: Shades, sometimes called poltergeists, are born out of heavy emotion -- usually, the extremely negative kind. They are not so much reflections as they are caricatures of the human they bloomed into existence because of, with exaggerated anger, loathing, sadness, and even happy spells. Shades are unpredictable and often dangerous, and are responsible for many malicious hauntings. HUMAN SPIRITS: If a human dies traumatically, or leaves unfinished business, they will sometimes leave a spirit behind. Their spirit is a reflection of their soul, but the longer they stay on earth, the more they can lose themselves. |
