FULL NAME:: Unknown, and she's not telling
NICKNAMES:: Z
GENDER:: Female
ACTUAL AGE:: 29
APPARENT AGE:: Late twenties, early thirties
SPECIES/RACE:: Witch
PREFERRED PRONOUNS:: She/her/hers
SEXUAL ORIENTATION:: Unexplored
FACECLAIM:: Danielle Brooks
NATIONALITY:: American
HEIGHT:: 5' 10"
HAIR:: Black
EYES:: Dark grey
SKIN:: Sepia
DISTINGUISHING MARKS:: None.
APPEARANCE:: Z doesn't put the most effort into her appearance in the world. For the most part, she doesn't need to--basic hygiene things are part of her daily routine, and she looks pretty good without doing anything special to herself. She doesn't go out as much as she probably should, so for most days this is fine. Z is a master of practicality and only likes doing what's necessary in situations such as these.
However, though she's not so fond of them, Z does recognize that more formal situations require more time. She usually straightens her hair and applies some makeup, sometimes wears a dress, and only ever wears something she can cast a good spell in. She tends to prefer flats, though she does have a few pairs of heels that she's used to. She prefers to tower over others so they know as soon as they look at her that she means business.
Z always wears something to store power on her person, usually an accessory of some sort, if only so she's never caught empty-handed. It's how she made it to the top, after all.
PERSONALITY:: Z's never been very good at making friends. She's very focused on her magic, and as such she doesn't spend a lot of time with other people. She likes to touch every object in a room to get to know its energy, which can sometimes be a little disconcerting if one isn't familiar with her. She's also not very easy to read in social situations, as she tends to forego facial expressions for more atypical reactions (for example, when she's angry, she doesn't frown, but rather stares intensely and makes an agitated humming noise). She's very intelligent, but isn't always the best at conversation. She's quiet, and she's a good listener, but she doesn't always recognize when a question warrants a response.
When routines are concerned, Z is incredibly inflexible. She has several designated parts of her day where things are allowed to deviate from the norm, such as going out with a friend or surfing on the internet, but the areas that she has specified for a certain task are not to be changed or tampered with unless one wants to suffer her full wrath--she considers this an unforgivable offense. If asked to change parts of her schedule for another person, she will adamantly refuse unless someone's well-being is on the line and could be easily prevented by her action at that time--and, of course, that whatever she's missing can be rescheduled to one of her "open" times. Though her routines are solid as concrete, Z tries to be a quite soft person and welcomes potential allies with open arms.
Z's preferred allies are other witches, though she is also fond of the Fae and spirits. She believes that words have their own power, and fully identifies with the Fae "true name" problem--which is why she never gives out her name. To these allies, Z is generous and warm, giving gifts to the witches and offerings to the Fae and spirits with a near-alarming frequency. Any others, she may consider being friends with… though it is uncommon that they want to approach her at all.

HISTORY:: Trigger warning for mentions of depression and parental abandonment.
Z was born in a rural town in Nebraska to a mother that didn't want her and a father she'd never met. She couldn't remember her mother's name if she tried, and she'd never learned the names of anyone else she'd been related to. Her mother was negligent at best, having fallen into a deep depression and letting television and toys substitute for a babysitter, hardly even remembering to feed her own child. Her mother also had no idea what was wrong with Z, even when the elementary school told her that Z was autistic. There weren't any adoption centers around, and so she didn't have much of a choice but to keep Z around until she decided to go on vacation to Florida to visit her parents.
When her parents told her they couldn't take the seven year old, Z's mother didn't bother to buy another ticket for her daughter. The one she'd gotten had been one-way, and she couldn't handle the stress of both trying to keep herself alive and supporting Z anymore. She left Z on a beach on the Atlantic Coast, and the child never saw her mother again. Pretty soon, Z forgot her mother's name, pushing it out of her mind for more important things like how to navigate in a cityscape unlike one she'd ever seen.
Z doesn't really blame her mother anymore. She wouldn't have done the same, sure, but Z doesn't think she would've had a child in the first place. She eventually managed to fight her way into an adoption agency after a long battle with Child Protective Services, and spent the next few years growing up there. In her puberty, her magic started to surface, and she was sent off to a different, more underground adoption agency that specifically handled those with magical ability that were without a home. This was more common than one might hope, given the shock and disgust that human parents tended to display when confronted with something they didn't understand. Here, Z's talents grew, as did her interest in her abilities. Soon, she became fixated on them, and despite the prompting of her caretakers, she did not make any attempt to befriend her fellows. She wasn't trying to be good enough for her mother, or for her father. It just fascinated her, what she could now accomplish, and she wanted to be able to utilize it to its fullest potential.
There were a fair amount of people who did adopt witch children, but Z was never chosen by any of them. She didn't mind that too much. Having to act interested in what her adopted parents said would have taken time away from reading. Z rarely spoke to anyone unless it was necessary until she graduated from high school, when she promptly got a job, earned enough money to move and live outside of the States, and did. She was interested in learning more about the Fae, and she thought that it would be a good place to study what was going on there. Perhaps it wouldn't be the easiest place to make money, but that wasn't her concern. Money had never been her concern.
After the war broke out, Z quickly became one of the leaders of the witches due to her years of study and widespread knowledge. She quickly discarded her old name before anyone committed it to memory, believing it to have a power over her similar to that of the Fae, and began going as "Z" instead. She has used this pseudonym since then in every interaction she's had with other beings, including Fae.
Z continues to study and practice diligently to this day to make sure she remains one of the best in the business, and occasionally takes on students from time to time when they have only just started to learn about their powers and have grown up in difficult situations. She has started teaching herself about responses to social cues, but she still has quite a long way to go before she's able to have a conversation that doesn't involve her asking about the other person's emotions at least once.
She does enjoy things that aren't magic, though it is her favorite pastime, and spends a good deal of her time sewing, cooking, and woodworking--anything she considers a craft, really, and can imbue a little bit of magic into. She has a shop filled with the things she's enchanted while making them, and a great many of them have some interesting but unexpected purposes. This is how she generates money to pay the bills, and also continues to do what she loves while being a significant person in a time of conflict.
