FULL NAME:: Devyn Todd Hardwick
NICKNAMES:: Dev, Devy, Dee
GENDER:: Male
ACTUAL AGE:: 194
APPARENT AGE:: Mid to late thirties
SPECIES/RACE:: Vampire
PREFERRED PRONOUNS:: he/him/his
SEXUAL ORIENTATION:: Panromantic asexual
FACECLAIM:: Stephen Merchant
NATIONALITY:: English
HEIGHT:: 6'7"
HAIR:: Red
EYES:: Blue-green-grey
SKIN:: Fair
DISTINGUISHING MARKS:: Two puncture marks where his neck meets his shoulder, and a scar on his forehead from bumping into the tops of doorframes.
APPEARANCE:: Devyn is one of the few people in the world that can be physically described in a single word: gangling. He is impossibly tall, sticks out in every possible crowd, and doesn't look like he should be able to even lift himself off the ground. His hair is usually some degree of messy, and his chin is covered with a fair amount of scruff. He usually looks confused, and if he weren't a vampire, he would always be donning a new bruise or cut on his forehead. Luckily for him, they tend to heal fairly quickly, though if he's just entered a room with you chances are he'll have one anyway.
Dev has terrible eyesight and wears very powerful glasses to compensate. His eyes are a mix of blue, green, and grey, though they can appear more of any one given the lighting and what he's wearing. He tends to dress casually compared to the other members of the Council, but can step it up a notch if he remembers to do so and will then wear well-tailored suits. Devyn is the master of looking unprofessional and unthreatening, and utilizes this to his utmost advantage.
PERSONALITY:: Devyn has always been an incredibly lucky person. As a result, remembering rules like "look both ways before crossing the street," "don't make mob bosses angry," and other such "common sense" things have always eluded him. His memory is terrible, and he doesn't actively try to remember things that he doesn't think will be important to him since it's a waste of the little space he does have. His actions are often foolish and impractical but somehow seem to work out anyway. He's a good person to have around, but not necessarily a good person to take advice from.
Having suffered little hardship apart from his turning, Dev is a pretty happy-go-lucky guy and a diehard optimist. He used to go by the adage "stay on the sunny side," which was a new phrase when he was a child, but now that he's a vampire he's recognized the irony and has been working out a replacement for about six decades. He's easy enough to get along with, though he's not averse to getting into conflict. He tends to lose the verbal sort, but he's physically stronger than average for a vampire and towers over his opponents. When he gets mad, it's written all over his face, and his normally sunny disposition goes cold with rage. He's not one for hotheaded anger so much as cool sneering and tearing down of his enemy's self-image, which he can be frighteningly good at. That side of Devyn tends not to show, though, seeing as he rarely gets himself into real trouble in the first place and doesn't anger quickly.

HISTORY:: Devyn was born in 1820. Ever since he was a young boy, he had taken a particular interest in two particular things: books and spiders. He read books about spiders. He went out of his way to find and study spiders. This was mostly attributed due to his intense dislike of insects, and came directly after finding out that spiders ate insects by careful observation (the thing with eight legs eats the thing with six). His family thought he was a little weird, but let him keep reading anyway, and soon he'd moved on to fiction (thankfully, not about spiders).
Dev was enraptured by castles and dragons, and at the age of ten he disappeared from home to go on his own adventure. His parents had always known him to believe in the fantastic and impractical, but they hadn't believed it would go this far. Surprisingly, Devyn survived for a year and a half on his own out adventuring, conveniently returning just after the search had been given up due to the riots of 1831. He told the story of how he'd survived comfortably, but had missed his family and as such had returned home. It was at about this point, the point at which his parents told him that they'd thought he would be dead (as most other children would have been), that Devyn started to realize that he was a very lucky boy.
His luck continued on into adulthood, when a very wealthy family member left their estate to him for helping to get rid of the insect infestation he'd had (this was, of course, caused by Devyn's ingenious plan of Mass Spider Translocation) as well as a sizable fortune. As was common among upper-class citizens, he took to gambling, and ended up doubling the fortune he'd been given within a very short timespan. Unfortunately for Devyn, the amount of riches he'd amassed in such a short period of time made those around him think that he was somehow cheating, even though he didn't believe himself to be tipping the odds, and as such a hit was ordered on him on the behalf of the gambling establishments he'd been running dry and those that had thought their odds were sound against him. Dev managed to avoid most of these hits due to sheer luck, but one night in a back alley his luck seemed to run dry as he was stabbed three times in the chest.
However, his luck had actually grown, at least from his perspective. Not too long after, he was encountered by a magnanimous vampire who turned him and left him her calling card so that he could contact her if he ran into any problems. He tried to meet up with her in broad daylight, not quite understanding the gravity of what was happening, but she didn't answer the door and he got himself inside and into bed just as his skin was starting to grow terribly itchy. When he did finally meet up with her, she told him that her name was Camilla and that she planned to teach him all that he would need to know.
Devyn was quick to discover that turning was imperfect and it had shown its imperfections in his own turning. He'd survived, yes, and his power (unbeknownst to him) hadn't lost strength--if anything, it had grown slightly stronger. However, the typical heightened senses that vampires received had decided to simply not surface in Devyn, and had in fact made his formerly decent eyesight completely useless to the point of legal blindness without corrective lenses. His hearing was okay, but not amazing, and he couldn't smell blood from more than maybe fifty feet away. This saddened him, but when he found that his luck had grown since his turning, he returned to earning money without a single complaint--this time being slightly more careful about who he pissed off and where he went to gamble.
Camilla and Devyn fell in love very quickly, but it wasn't to last. Late one night, Camilla disappeared. Devyn heard later from the local community that a hunter had taken her and that she was missing, presumed dead. Though his tracking skills were subpar, Devyn's cold vengeance fell upon the hunter due to a very unlucky (for him) chance encounter several weeks later. The hunter would not tell Devyn where Camilla was, nor whether she was dead or alive, so he has continued to assume that she is among the deceased for about a hundred years now.
Since then, Devyn has purchased several homes around the globe (all just as lavish and large as the first, including a castle in rural Scotland) with his fortune and has read a great deal more books (he may be currently trying to decorate his castle like Hogwarts, even though his favorite book is Charlotte's Web). He has at least a moderately-sized home in every vampire-controlled city, and continues to amass enough money to pay taxes on them by exploiting odds (both with his powers and with his ability to calculate probability). He's also been searching for a thrall, since his last one died a few years ago and he hasn't been able to find one since because of his terrible track record. Someday, his luck may run out, but when he was brought onto the Council for his incredible luck and to no small end his wealth, they reasoned that that day would not be any day soon.
So far, they've been right.
